Colours of The Milky Way – Freshwater Bay

  • Freshwater Bay West Wight
Visible colours of green, red and purple airglow can be seen here whilst overlooking the channel from Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight. Airglow is a phenomenon that occurs when molecules (mostly that of nitrogen and oxygen) are energised by UV radiation from sunlight. To release that energy, atoms in the lower atmosphere bump into each other and lose energy in the collision. But the upper atmosphere is thinner, so atoms are less likely to collide. Instead, they release their energy by emitting photons.
